Your electrical panel distributes power throughout the house and protects each circuit. Many panels serve safely for years, but corrosion, heat damage, limited capacity, obsolete equipment, or plans for major new loads can make an evaluation worthwhile.
1. The panel shows heat, rust, or physical damage
Discoloration, a burning smell, buzzing, crackling, melted insulation, rust, water intrusion, or a panel that feels unusually hot can point to a damaged connection or component. 2. Breakers trip repeatedly or no longer operate correctly
Repeated trips may come from an overloaded circuit, a wiring fault, a failing appliance, or a breaker problem—not necessarily an undersized panel. An electrician should identify the equipment rather than recommending replacement based on age alone.
6. Insurance, a sale, or a renovation requires documentation
An insurer, buyer, lender, or permitting authority may request information about the service equipment. Their requirements do not by themselves diagnose an unsafe panel, but they can create a practical reason to document its condition and plan any needed corrections before a deadline.
When a repair may be enough
If the enclosure and bus are in good condition and the service has adequate capacity, the right solution may be replacing a properly matched breaker, correcting a circuit issue, improving labeling, sealing a source of moisture, or adding a code-compliant subpanel. The goal should be the repair the home actually needs—not a panel replacement by default.
What a professional evaluation should include
- Identification of the panel, service rating, and approved breaker types.
- Inspection for corrosion, overheating, damage, improper modifications, and loose connections.
- Review of available breaker spaces and the home's current and planned electrical loads.
- Evaluation of grounding, bonding, service conductors, and related equipment within the requested scope.
- A clear explanation of whether repair, a subpanel, or a service and panel upgrade is appropriate.
Do not upgrade based on age alone
Age is only one part of the decision. A properly installed, well-maintained panel with adequate capacity may continue to serve the home, while a newer panel with corrosion, heat damage, incompatible parts, or poor workmanship may need attention. An on-site evaluation is the reliable way to decide.
