GFCI protection is commonly used in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoor areas, laundry spaces, and other locations where electricity and moisture may meet. One GFCI receptacle can also protect several ordinary-looking outlets farther downstream, so the cause may not be at the device that tripped.
1. Unplug everything on the affected circuit
Unplug appliances, tools, chargers, extension cords, and outdoor equipment from the affected outlets. Press the GFCI reset button once. If it holds, reconnect one item at a time. If the GFCI trips when a particular item is plugged in or turned on, stop using that item until it can be checked.
2. Look for moisture
Rain, wind-driven water, condensation, irrigation, a leaking appliance, or a damp outdoor cord can create a path for current to escape. Corpus Christi humidity and coastal weather can also contribute to corrosion in outdoor boxes and equipment. Do not handle wet electrical devices; let a qualified professional inspect them.
3. Check other outlets the GFCI may protect
The tripped device may feed outlets in another bathroom, the garage, outside, or on the opposite side of a wall. Look for plugged-in equipment or visible damage at those locations. Do not remove receptacles or covers to trace the circuit yourself.
4. A connected appliance may be leaking current
Refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, pressure washers, pool equipment, and other motor- or heating-based appliances can develop insulation or moisture problems. A device may appear to run normally while still leaking enough current to trip GFCI protection.
5. The GFCI device may be worn or damaged
GFCI receptacles do not last forever. Age, repeated trips, heat, corrosion, physical damage, or a failed internal test can prevent reliable resetting. Replacement may solve the problem, but the circuit should still be checked so a wiring or equipment fault is not overlooked.
6. The circuit may have a wiring fault
A damaged cord, loose connection, pinched conductor, neutral-to-ground contact, water intrusion, or insulation failure can cause recurring trips. These problems require proper test equipment and should be diagnosed by a qualified electrician.
What you can safely check
- Unplug connected devices with dry hands and from a dry location.
- Look for obvious water, damaged cords, cracked covers, discoloration, or burned odors.
- Press the GFCI test button, then reset it once, if the device is dry and shows no damage.
- Notice whether the trip follows one particular appliance or occurs during rain.
- Leave the device off if it trips again, and do not bypass the GFCI protection.
When to call an electrician
Call when the GFCI will not reset with everything unplugged, trips repeatedly, affects multiple outlets, shows heat or damage, or serves outdoor, pool, spa, kitchen, bathroom, or appliance equipment. An electrician can separate the protected loads, test for leakage and wiring faults, inspect moisture-prone boxes, and verify that the correct protection is installed.
